A Leap in the Dark:The Dangers of Bioenergy with
Carbon Capture and Storage (BECCS)
Bioenergy with Carbon Capture and Storage (BECCS) is a
risky, unproven, costly, and dangerous distraction from the urgent and drastic
emissions cuts needed to prevent catastrophic climate change. Yet the fossil
fuel industry has been keen to present it as the long-awaited magical climate
fix, simply because it would enable them to keep on profiting from the
destruction of our communities and ecosystems.
Friends of the Earth International opposes BECCS
because:
1.
It is a dangerous
distraction from real, adequate, urgently needed climate action.
2.
It would have
unimaginable social and ecological impacts.
3.
It is unproven and
ineffective.
4.
It opens the door to
corrupt carbon offsetting.
BECCS won’t provide the solution to the increasing
violence of climate impacts. The solutions already exist, within our peoples
and communities. To achieve climate justice we demand clean, accessible,
affordable, community-owned energy systems.
In our report “A Leap in the Dark: The Dangers of Bioenergy
with Carbon Capture and Storage (BECCS)” we unpack the risks and pitfalls of BECCS
and why it must be opposed.
